We Have Her Back
Too ambitious. Too angry. Too persistent. Too old. Too young. Nasty. We’re putting the news media on notice: no more sexism in political coverage.
In 2020, the United States elected the first woman as Vice President and a record number of women to Congress. These are historic milestones, but we can’t forget why it’s so rare: The news media plays a huge part in perpetuating sexist and racist tropes about the ambition, likeability, looks, or attitude of women candidates across parties, especially women of color.
Overcoming the consequences of those narratives has been next to impossible for generations of women.
That’s why TIME’S UP Now and other leading women’s advocacy organizations are continuing to take action to demand that media executives, news directors, and other opinion leaders keep these ignorant, bad-faith attacks out of their 2020 election coverage. It’s time to end the problematic media rhetoric around women candidates — regardless of her party or the office she seeks.
