Today, Joseph R. Biden will become the 46th President of the United States as he takes the oath of office during the 59th Presidential Inauguration. He will be joined by Kamala D. Harris, who will be sworn in as the 46th Vice President of the United States – becoming the first woman and first Black and Asian American person to ever hold the office.

Tina Tchen, president and CEO of TIME’S UP Now, shared the following statement:

“Today marks a new era of hope and opportunity, as our country unites under new leadership committed to the generations-long struggle for safety, dignity, and equity for all – and as we witness Kamala Harris make history as our first Black and Asian woman vice president.

“What is so powerful about seeing history made today is the reminder it sends to little girls everywhere – and Black and brown girls, in particular – about the power that resides in each of us. This country is ours and its future is ours to make. We are an unstoppable force for change, and so we can’t let up now.”
