TIME’S UP Releases Statement on the Lack of Caregiving Provisions in the $579 Billion Infrastructure Plan

Equity, Federal Policy

“The news today just underscores how much work still must be done in Congress to meet the needs of our country. Our treatment of caregivers is as dated as the broken roads and bridges included in today’s bipartisan proposal. The way we work and live our lives requires a new infrastructure that invests in fair wages, flexibility, and support caregivers deserve.

We can not tell caregivers to get in line or wait their turn. Caregivers know better than anyone else that waiting has a cost. Parents who have missed a meeting because of a sick child. The employee who doesn’t seek out a promotion because of the responsibilities to care for a loved one. These are not just one-time inconveniences. They amount to years in lost productivity, pay equity, and labor force participation that ultimately creates less inclusive and equitable workplaces and hurts our economy. Caregiving is infrastructure, today and tomorrow.

To fully realize the economic progress we’re capable of, progress that includes every worker, especially women and other vulnerable communities, it’s imperative that the final package enacted by Congress include investments for comprehensive caregiving infrastructure.
