TIME’S UP Now: “Our Fundamental Rights Are on the Line”

TIME'S UP 2020, Trump Administration

Moments ago, Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to advance the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Senate floor, while Democrats on the committee boycotted the vote in protest of this illegitimate process.

Tina Tchen, president and CEO of TIME’S UP Now, provided the following statement:

“It is an irresponsible and undemocratic abuse of power to see the Republican Senate leadership on the Judiciary Committee rush to fill Justice Ruth Ginsburg’s seat in the middle of an election and instead of providing coronavirus relief for the millions of families harmed by the pandemic and the economic crisis. This sham process is preventing the American public from understanding how her extreme views are out of step with our Constitutional values and principles.

“Despite the woefully insufficient time available for vetting Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s 23-year record and views, it’s clear she is extreme and has no place on the Supreme Court. From access to health care and reproductive rights, to economic security and our ability to live freely and fully as people of all backgrounds, Judge Barrett is a real threat to the values and rights we fought so hard to win.

“Make no mistake: our fundamental rights are on the line. The Senate needs to say no to this extreme nominee.”

Additional Background:

Judge Barrett has ruled against sexual violence survivors multiple times. Judge Barrett has a record of defending abusers and abusive institutions in cases of campus and prison sexual harassment and assault.

Judge Barrett defended overt racial discrimination in the workplace. Judge Barrett upheld a dismissal of a workplace discrimination case in 2019, saying that calling a Black employee the ‘n word’ does not make for a hostile or abusive work environment.

Judge Barrett threatens the rights of LGBTQIA+ people. Judge Barrett has long signaled she would rule in ways that deny the rights to LGBTQIA+ people, whether by repealing marriage equality or refusing to recognize the rights of transgender people. If seated on the Court, she could erode these rights immediately, with oral arguments on whether taxpayer-funded adoption agencies can turn away LGBTQIA+ families scheduled for November 4 – the day after Election Day.
