TIME’S UP Commends President-Elect Biden’s Nominees to Lead Justice Department

Today, President-elect Joe Biden announced he will nominate a group of civil rights leaders — majority of them women — to lead the Department of Justice, including: Judge Merrick Garland from the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals for Attorney General; former Homeland Security Adviser Lisa Monaco for Deputy Attorney General; former Justice Department Civil Rights Chief and President of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights Vanita Gupta for Associate Attorney General; and the President of the National Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law Kristen Clarke for Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights.
Tina Tchen, president and CEO of TIME’S UP Now, provided the following statement:
“At a time when our democracy is under siege, President-elect Biden’s nominees to lead the Justice Department demonstrates the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to protecting civil rights and defending our democratic institutions.
“Crucially, these nominees’ vast experience on race, public safety, and equity reassures the American people of their readiness to fight discrimination from day one — ensuring equal justice under the law for women, trans people and gender nonconforming people, BIPOC people, people with disabilities, and all those whose civil rights have been under concerted, unrelenting attack the last four years. What’s more, these officials have the opportunity to reimagine a criminal and legal response to sexual violence to help ensure survivors have greater access to justice and healing — on their own terms.
“But progress never comes without a fight. Some will try to attack these highly-qualified leaders without merit — we’ve seen it before. Make no mistake: as we head into a contentious nomination process in the Senate, we will have their back.”
