We Have Her Back

TIME’S UP Commends Kristen Welker for Strength and Skill During Debate

Changing Culture, TIME'S UP 2020, We Have Her Back

Tonight, NBC’s Kristen Welker made history as the second Black woman to moderate a presidential debate. Yet for days leading up to the debate, Welker was subjected to vicious attacks, including from President Trump and his supporters.

Tina Tchen, president and CEO of TIME’S UP Now, provided the following statement in response:

“Kristen Welker is an accomplished journalist with a stellar reputation for fairness and accuracy, and her strength as a skilled reporter was on display during tonight’s debate. But her integrity, intellect, and strength have also made her the target of racist and sexist attacks from those opposed to racial and gender equity — an unfortunate reality all too familiar to Black women in public life.

“TIME’S UP refuses to sit by and let these damaging tropes and stereotypes spread any further. That’s why we started the We Have Her Back campaign to ensure women candidates, and women leaders generally, are treated with the dignity and respect they have earned.”
