Washington, D.C. — Today, President Joe Biden unveiled parts of his administration’s multi-trillion dollar economic package, including an unprecedented investment in our nation’s care infrastructure. This package includes hundreds of billions for: upgrading child care facilities, building new facilities in areas that need them most, expanding child care tax credits for families, creating new jobs and raising wages and benefits for caregivers, and investing in home and community-based care for people 65 and older and people with disabilities.
Tina Tchen, president and CEO of TIME’S UP Now, provided the following statement:
“TIME’S UP applauds the Biden-Harris administration for recognizing that care can’t wait, and taking an unprecedented step toward rebuilding and expanding our economy and getting family caregivers back to work. Paid and unpaid caregivers have been undervalued for decades, but the past year has brought caregivers — who are disproportionately BlPOC women — to a breaking point. Importantly, today’s proposal recognizes that building our nation’s care infrastructure is as critical to our economic recovery as building our roads and bridges infrastructure — both are needed to get our country back to work.
“But we can’t stop here. A holistic and comprehensive investment in our nation’s care infrastructure must include permanent paid family and medical leave and access to affordable, quality child care. Such an investment will support millions of new jobs for those who need it most and translate into billions in new economic activity for years to come. We look forward to working with the administration and Congress to ensure that our nation’s economy and our caregivers can thrive.”
