TIME’S UP Blasts Congress for Failure to Extend Emergency Paid Leave and Provide Critical Funding for Child Care in COVID-Relief Package

“It’s time that our national leaders come together and support caregivers and the people they’re caring for,” says Tina Tchen

Tonight, Congress passed a COVID-19 package that failed to include provisions essential for economic relief now, such as a paid leave guarantee for workers and adequate funding needed to stabilize the child care sector.

Excluding these critical provisions is harmful for the health and economic well-being of millions of women and families, and it contradicts the will of voters. In addition to an election exit poll from TIME’S UP Now finding 72 percent of 2020 voters see an investment in care infrastructure as a “very important” part of economic recovery, a new TIME’S UP Foundation poll released today found that 90 percent of registered voters agree that providing support and services for people with children and aging, ill, or disabled family members will provide economic stability for millions of people.

Tina Tchen, president and CEO of TIME’S UP Now, responded with the following statement:

“When people have to choose between jobs, their own health, or a loved one’s well-being, it’s clear that something is seriously wrong with our system. Yet the COVID-19 relief package passed in Congress falls woefully short of what is needed to bring immediate and long-term relief to families and caregivers.

“We need relief, and we need it now. In the immediate-term, that means ensuring people can keep their jobs when they get sick or need time off to care for a loved one. This moment — when COVID-19 is surging around the country — is the wrong time to cut back on the limited progress made this Spring to ensure paid sick leave for workers who otherwise wouldn’t have it. We also need long-term investments in our care infrastructure to help people earn living wages and stay in jobs, which will promote productivity and build a stronger, more resilient economy for all of us.

“It’s time that our national leaders come together and support caregivers and the people they’re caring for.”
