NYC Announces New Restaurant Revitalization Program in Push for One Fair Wage

Changing Laws & Policy, Equity, New York

In partnership with One Fair Wage (OFW), a national campaign to eliminate the tipped wage and lift restaurant workers out of poverty, Mayor Bill De Blasio and the Taskforce on Racial Inclusion and Equity announced a program to direct $3 million towards restaurants committed to paying their workers equitably and providing support to neighborhoods hardest-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program aims to partner with restaurants that have made a commitment to pay a full minimum wage, increase racial and gender equity, and expand access to communities facing food insecurity during this crisis.

Tina Tchen, president and CEO of TIME’S UP Now, provided the statement below:

“The health and economic impacts of the pandemic have exposed the long-standing reality that our workplaces are neither fair nor equitable. For too long, the tipped minimum wage has perpetuated deeply-entrenched racial and gender inequities, preventing restaurant and service industry workers —70 percent of whom are women — from earning livable wages and leaving them more vulnerable to sexual harassment and discrimination.

“To ensure that we emerge from this crisis with stronger, safer, and more equitable workplaces, leaders must invest in their employees, focusing on those who are most vulnerable. The Restaurant Revitalization Program serves as a powerful example of what can be achieved when the public and private sector band together to prioritize equity and inclusion. We hope this initiative not only helps restaurants get back on their feet, but also inspires long-term structural changes to dismantle racism and inequality in the restaurant industry — and beyond.”
