NBC News: Race, Gender Dominated Coverage Of Harris’s VP Announcement, Report Finds

NBC News reported on a TIME’S UP Now study, released last week, comparing coverage of Senator Kamala Harris in the two weeks following her announcement as Vice President to coverage of Governor Mike Pence and Senator Tim Kaine in 2016.
The report found that while nearly two thirds of analyzed coverage mentioned Sen. Harris’s race and gender, only five percent mentioned then-Gov. Pence’s and Sen. Kaine’s race and gender. This highlights that the white male identity is seen as the “default” in our society. Tina Tchen, president and CEO of TIME’S UP Now, called for the news media to take a critical look at their coverage.
